Perfect Cultural Activity for English-Speaking Tourists

Fine Cigars Bayahibe invites you to discover our Taínos museum. It will give you an insight into the art and culture of the peoples before the arrival of Christopher Columbus.

The Taínos were present in all the Caribbean islands from around 1200 AD to 1500 AD and when Christopher Columbus arrived in the area, the Taínos were the indigenous group he met.

Authentic Pre-Columbian Collection for International Visitors

Over the years, we have assembled hundreds of pieces from this pre-Columbian civilization. We invite you to discover them in our little museum where we will give you cultural and historical explanations on the meanings of the different objects.

Taíno Art & Spirituality

The Taíno are known for their art, which is found everywhere in the Dominican Republic. Their spiritual beliefs have often been described in their works of art, sculptures and paintings.

The figures often seen in Taíno art are the main gods, Yucahu (god of cassava) and Atabey, mother of Yucahu and god of the moon, freshwater and fertility. The physical representation of the gods was called "Zemi", it was both a drawing and an object. These were often made of wood, stone, shell, bone, pottery and cotton.

Yucahu

God of Cassava

Supreme god of the Taíno pantheon, protector of agriculture and provider of yuca (cassava), the staple food of their civilization.

Atabey
